"Won't my clients be nervous about conflict of interest if I niche into an industry?"
“Won’t my clients be nervous about conflict of interest if I niche into an industry? What if they think I’ll share trade secrets?”
Totally fair question.
Yes—clients can be nervous about competition.
But they’re petrified of their own financial blind spots.
And fear of their own incompetence > fear of you sharing something.
You might worry your client is thinking:
“He’s going to share my best practices and help my competitor beat me.”
But what they’re actually thinking is:
“Thank god—he understands my industry and will finally help me make more money.”
If two clients feel truly in direct competition—and that makes you uncomfortable—it’s totally okay to take a pass on the second one.
But also, if they didn’t trust you or had concerns about your ethics?
They wouldn’t be talking to you in the first place.
Want to niche—but still have clients all over the map, and it feels daunting?
