A social construction

The 40-hour week is a social construction.

It’s also a widely recognized standard. But that does not make it the gold standard.

When you’re on your own, you are free to work 4 or 40 or 400 hours a week.

You decide how many hours you work; there is no standard.

It would be easy to fall into the habit of working 40 hours per week because “that’s what everyone else is doing.” It can provide some comfort and an illusion of safety. That it’s the “right” thing to do.

Working 40 hours a week may not be more comfortable or safer than working 30 hours per week, or 20. Nor will working those hours necessarily make you more money.

What kind of workweek do you want to construct?
