Reasons to plan your tax season now

There are plenty of reasons to plan your tax season now:

End overworking.

– Know what your capacity is (and isn’t)

– Not fill beyond capacity and stress yourself out, and wear your team thin

Optimize pricing.

Have time to:

– think through what your clients value beyond just getting the return done

– test prices on segments of clients

– set prices based on the response to price tests

Optimize your client roster.

– think through who you want (and don’t) as clients

– reshape your client roster in stages so you don’t fire too many, or not enough

Provide payment options.

Give clients a choice as to how they want to reserve their spot:

– Pay in full up front in December

– 50% deposit, 50% at time of prep+file

The above can:

– soften winter cashflow issues

– help you put a permanent end to chasing A/R

– signal that you are in the driver’s seat

– signal that you are in demand

…. And when you signal that you’re in demand, clients behave better

When you start planning your tax season now, you have time to…

Design your workflow.

– Know what letters are getting sent out to who, and when

– Set up communication so clients, you, and your team are positioned to work smoothly together

– Get your tech streamlined and dialed in so things run like a Swiss train

– Allow clients to select a week where their return will get worked on and completed

– Stop chasing clients for documents

– Create a smoother, more efficient experience for both you and your clients

– Communicate clear business boundaries, deadlines, and consequences so they show up the way you want them to

Plenty of reasons to start planning your tax season now.

If you start now, will your 2024 tax season be perfect?

Of course not. There is no such thing as perfect.

If you start now, will your 2024 tax season be better than last year’s?

Almost certainly.
