Price a Strategy Session Instead

As if on cue, the universe delivered this report on how CPAs and accountants price (et-hem, bill) for their services, in which I noticed that 50% of respondents bill hourly for Advisory Services.

After yesterday's email, ("Pricing expertise by the hour is like pricing ski boots by the pound; neither makes any sense,") I thought it might be worth taking a crack at the question,

"How do I price Advisory in advance?"

It's a big question, so let's start with the simplest possible "advisory" product: the single meeting. If you're going to bill for your time after the fact, you may as well price your time up front.

Then spiff up what you call your time, because, "An hour with Nancy" lacks appeal. Here are options you can mix and match from:

Give it a name:
Tax Planning & Strategy Meeting
Financial Solution Meeting
Strategy Call
Strategy Session
Planning Meeting
Tax Planning, Projection, & Strategy Call

If you can't decide, start with Tax Strategy & Planning Meeting. It's clear and simple, and very likely to provide plenty of value.

Give it a length:
30 minutes
45 minutes
60 minutes
90 minutes
2 hours

If you are just starting out with these, pick what length of time you think you need in order to provide meaningful value. If you don't know, start with an hour and learn from your experience.

Give it a price:
$195
$295
$495
$795
$995

If you are just starting out with these, pick a price where you feel confident it would be worth it to your buyer 5x over. If you're not sure, start with $295, hold your meetings, and see if you can regularly save clients $1500+ in that time. If you can, you're in a good spot.
...

Now you have a starting point to move off hourly billing for Advisory Services:
60 Minute Tax Strategy & Planning Meeting – $295**
...
Good.
...

Now go put it on your website, hook it up to Calendly, and in the Calendly workflow, enable the option to accept payment on the spot.

**This is likely way underpriced, but we need to start somewhere!
