Junk miles. Junk Hours.

Long-time readers know I’m something of an endurance junkie.

Which means: runrunrunrunrun—many miles.

One of the biggest “mistakes” runners make? Running too many miles.

They (naturally) think more miles = better fitness.

So they run lots of miles.

Then they run... lots of junk miles.

But what actually makes them stronger?

  • Threshold heart-rate runs

  • Hill repeats

  • Track/speed work

And what do they undervalue?

RECOVERY.

Recovery is when muscles repair and strengthen.

Runners who think they’re “tougher than” rest days? Who “just go running” anyway? They’re on the fast track to over-training.

And over-training leads to:

  • Fatigue

  • Reduced performance

  • Injuries

Runners who focus on volume over quality don’t perform as well.

Accountants got taught that hours make money.

So they work long hours to make money.

But hours don’t make money.

VALUE MAKES MONEY.

Some of those hours produce value.

Some don’t.

A lot of those hours? Junk hours.

Junk hours might include:

  • Chasing clients for documents

  • Scrolling up and down in your inbox

  • Using email to schedule meetings, instead of Calendly

  • Fixing staff’s and contractors’ mistakes

  • Using your brain to worry or be annoyed instead of solving problems

Junk hours at your desk lead to:

  • Fatigue

  • Reduced performance and errors

  • Burnout

Junk hours at your desk?

Better to not work them.

Junk miles?

Better to not run them.
