Junk miles. Junk Hours.

Long-time readers know I’m something of an endurance junkie, which means, runrunrunrunrun, many miles.

One of the “mistakes” that many runners make, is running too many training miles.

They (natually) think that more miles will get them in better shape.

So they run “lots of miles.”

Then they run… lots of junk miles.

Because what actually gets them in better shape are:

  • Threshold heart-rate runs.

  • Hill repeats.

  • Track / speed runs.

And what they often undervalue, is recovery.

Recovery is required for muscles to repair and strengthen themselves.

Runners who think they’re “tougher than” recovery time, and can “just go running” on rest days, put themselves on the fast-track to being over-trained.

Over-training shows up as fatigue, reduced performance, and injuries.

Junk miles. Better to not run them.

Junk hours at your desk. Better to not work them.
