How do I say no to people who want to talk to me about something?

How do I say no to people who want to talk to me about something?

AKA, “Can I meet with you to talk about X?”

Only you, can prevent forest fires.

Oh, wait, no.

Only you, can protect your time.

Possible scripts:

  1. Push it to after tax season. “Maybe. At the moment my time is allocated for preparing for a smooth tax season. Let’s pick this up after April 21st.”

  2. If it’s sure to be short but you can’t do it this week or today: “Can we sort it out over Slack/Teams/email or jump on a quick Zoom next week?”

  3. If you’re a fan of time-blocking: “Sure - put time on my calendar - I reserve Friday mornings for short meetings.” (Create your Calendly link to have half of Friday available, for very short meetings, with a field for the person to enter their question so you have a crystal clear agenda, and honor the time boundary of the meeting.)

Only you, can protect your time.
