Buying a clean chimney

I had our chimney swept today.

Two women clad in sooty charcoal woolies scrubbed 16 feet of galvanized steel pipe, 8" in diameter.

...

They were here for all of 20 minutes, and left a bill for $198.

That's $660 per hr, or $3.90 per sq-ft.

...

Had the owner asked me last month if I wanted my chimney swept, I would have said, "No thanks, I don't think I need that."

But instead, my neighbor, whose house is a twin to ours, recounted to me with a degree of animation, his chimney fire and the down-draft flames pouring into his living room.

He said, "I don't think you want to be worried about a chimney fire."

Darn straight, I don't!

...

I didn't buy my chimney swept.

I didn't buy my chimney swept by the hour.

I didn't buy my chimney swept by the square foot.

...

I bought, "Stop worrying about a chimney fire every winter night."

And that was worth well more than $198 in peace of mind.

...

What are your people (actually) buying?
